A Human Being Died That Night

Based on the book by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela
Adapted for stage by Nicholas Wright

Directed by Steven Wright

October 24-November 11

EgoPo’s mainstage season kicks off with this searing account of the atrocities committed by the South African police forces under apartheid. This heart-rending play is adapted from the award-winning 2003 book by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, a psychologist who served on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Set in Pretoria Central Prison, the author is assigned to report on ex-officer Eugene de Kock, nicknamed Prime Evil. Pumla and Eugene must confront their ideas of humanity and the power of forgiveness and remorse. Venue: Latvian Society Theater, 531 N. 7th Street (7th and Spring Garden)

“Quietly gripping” –New York Times
“Transcends the South African context with its extraordinary message.” –The South African

“Wright’s scorching play…is not just [about] two people. It is the old South Africa and the new South Africa.
It is a test of them both, and of the limits – or not – of forgiveness and empathy.”
–The Guardian
