What is Liwetan?

Liwetan is a tradition from East Java, Indonesia, which serves to mark special rituals and rites of passage. Communities gather to enjoy a selection of dishes served on banana leaves, which enhances the aroma and aesthetic of the food. Partners

  • Modero Dance

Modero is a South Philadelphia dance group founded by Sinta Penyami Storms. Originally started as a dance company, Modero quickly expanded its mission to encompass other aspects of Indonesian culture, including food, fashion, and beyond. Through its various initiatives, Modero has successfully bridged the gap between traditional and contemporary Indonesian culture. Besides sustaining the Indonesian community's creative economy, Modero dancers are actively involved in social justice issues such as race and gender equality, immigration issues, and worker's rights.

Modero has been recognized to be the Indonesian culture torch bearer in the city of brotherly love and have performed in many prestigious events such as the World Festival of Families during the Papal Visit in September 2015, Philadelphia Phillies games in 2015 and 2016, Ted@UPS Talk on September 15, 2016 in Atlanta Georgia (SCAD SHOW) and more.

  • Swarthmore Gamelan Semara Santi

Gamelan Semara Santi is a classical percussion orchestra from Bali, Indonesia, consisting of tuned gongs, bronze-keyed xylophones, drums, and bamboo flutes. Approximately 20 to 25 musicians participate, mostly Swarthmore students, plus a few additional community members. We perform classical and modern compositions from Bali - some instrumental, some with dance. We rehearse Indonesian style, without the use of notation.

  • Pecel Ndeso

Irza Noer Hajati and her husband, Aditya, are originally from Surabaya in East Java, Indonesia, and together they co-founded Pecel Ndeso, a licensed Indonesian community catering company, named after Irza’s specialty dish, Pecel. This is a traditional Javanese salad, consisting of mixed vegetables in a peanut sauce dressing, usually served with steamed rice or compressed rice cakes of either lontong or ketupat style. The word Ndeso is used in Javanese language to mean village or villager.

The couple started this business venture in 2005 by making small batches of food and selling them in Indonesian stores in South Philadelphia. The food was so sought after by local residents that the couple started being hired to cater for special occasions. Since then, Pecel Ndeso has participated in many community events in South Philadelphia.

Their services & cooking are sought after by Indonesian communities up and down the East Coast, including the Indonesian Consulate General in New York City.
